about

Build Me This came right around the time that “The Sun Is Always Brighter” was having her hay-day. I was writing ferociously for the next record and was being overwhelmed with the content that was coming to mind. I decided to take on a challenge, albeit self-imposed, to write 50 songs in 50 days which, in turn, would give me enough songs for the next record. After I had finished all 50 and some others that were written before the self placed challenge I stepped back from what songs I had written and noticed a common thread throughout them all. “Build Me This” was the beginning of my searching for SOMETHING. Call it an eye in the sky, call it God, call it existence, but it was a search nonetheless. With the songs in my head, floating freely, I headed back to the ever-sunny city of Los Angeles. Along side my producing manager, Shannon Edgar, I entered Sunset Sound Studios with a team of mean and gritty musicians that would help me form what would eventually become “Build Me This”.
Todd Burke was engineering the record and had known Joey Waronker (drums) and Justin Meldal-Johnson (Bass) for quite some time. He had helped engineer some Beck recordings for which both Joey and Justin had been a part of. Apart from Joey and Justin, Phil Parlapiano (who had played organ and piano on “The Sun Is Always Brighter”) was also asked to be a part of the gang. We entered the studio in late 2008 and in two days recorded 16 songs. The record was tracked quickly but not finished all in Los Angeles. I started getting it into my head that “Build Me This” had to be my masterpiece of music. I was meticulous about the compositions and all their parts. I had, over the course of a couple of years, built up a small artillery of microphones and recording equipment that was at my disposal. I finished all of the “over-dubs” in my small house that I had bought with my lady just a year prior.
“Build Me This” was a change for me, a transition period of both internal and external influence. As with “The Sun Is Always Brighter” many of the themes remained as life and her consistent manner in which she deals us a heavy hand.
“Build Me This” eventually was mixed and released in late 2009.
